FAQ

What makes your firm different than another law firm?

Our focus is and has always been entrepreneurs and the legal and business issues that entrepreneurs face. We don’t handle car wrecks, divorces, probating estates, and other practice areas. We are not a “full service” law firm. Because of that, we have developed and implemented specific methods to identify and remedy business-related issues that other attorneys or firms might miss.

Where do you provide services?

We are based in Birmingham, Alabama and primarily serve clients in central Alabama. However, we have represented clients across the county. Our attorneys are licensed to practice in Alabama and Tennessee.

I just have a quick question, do I need to schedule a consultation?

Yes. There are very few “quick questions” in law. Your situation is likely more detailed than you realize. There’s also a number of other reasons for why we don’t answer “quick questions,” which you can find out about by clicking here.

Can you represent my business?

Absolutely. When we are retained, we are either hired by an individual or the company. Rarely are we ethically permitted to represent both an individual and a company if the company has more than one owner. In situations where a business has multiple owners, we are often retained to represent the business and the best interests of that business, which means that we can provide advice to the business and its officers and even mediate potential disputes between owners. However, if we represent the company, we are conflicted out of representing any of the owners individually against any of the other owners of the business.

What are your rates?

Our rates vary depending on the scope of work, the attorney assigned to the matter, and the experience necessary to complete that scope of work. Our attorney rates range between $150 and $325 an hour. Paralegal rates can run between $75 and $125 an hour. Staff rates run from $35 to $65 an hour.

I don’t have a lot of money to hire an attorney, can you still help me?

Of course! We are often retained on a “limited scope” basis that allows us to handle a specific matter, such as a lawsuit, reviewing and negotiating a contract, or drafting documents. We do limited-scope representation on an hourly rate or flat fee, depending on the complexity. This allows us to do a specific project in an economical manner.

Do you provide payment plans?

We do provide payment plans, but we do not start working on a matter until we’ve been paid in full. We accept cash, check, or credit or debit card. If you do not have enough money to get started, we have recently rolled out ClientCredit, which you can find out about here.

Can your firm get paid in equity?

Sometimes, but rarely. It’s very rare that we agree to take an equity position in a company in exchange for legal services. In addition to there being ethical limitations on taking equity, we have found that taking a position in our clients’ businesses can unnecessarily complicate our role as advisors and advocates. While there are exceptions, these are few and far between.

I don’t have the faintest idea of where to start, what should I do?

If you don’t know where to start, then an initial consultation is the best place.
