Our Principles

Mission

Our firm's mission is to provide new and veteran entrepreneurs the advice and service that allows them to focus on building their business, without having to worry about the details of legal compliance, liabilities, or other distractions. Further, we strive to add value to our clients' businesses by providing legal and business advice that contributes to the bottom line.

Vision

We aspire to be the go-to business law firm for entrepreneurs across the Southeast by 2022.

Principles

Innovation

We prioritize innovative solutions to legal problems. While proven methods are never disregarded, strict adherence to "how we've always done it" is not a virtue. The best solution to this problem might be one we have not tried before.

Profit

We are in the business of business. We should be constantly cognizant of our role in our client's bottom line and should strive to contribute more than we cost.

Collaboration

Our relationship with our clients is symbiotic association, and our operations should encourage and facilitate our clients' involvement in setting and meeting goals.

Hiring an attorney can be a stressful and daunting experience. A brief search online will return dozens of nearly identical law firm websites all claiming to be able to help you solve your problem. So how do you pick the right one? Why should you pick us over the alternatives?

How We Are Different

While I hold myself to the highest standards of the legal profession, I strive to differentiate my practice from those of other attorneys in the way that I practice and the way that I work with my clients.

Broader Skill Set

Most attorneys graduate from undergraduate and law schools without ever having sufficient business training. While this can make them better attorneys, it can lead to tunnel vision where a good lawyer might miss a major issue because of a lack of business training and experience.

Unlike most attorneys, I have a non-legal skill set that helps me to address issues specific to small businesses. As one of the few practicing attorneys with an M.B.A., I am able to address questions relating to business valuation, M&A strategy, marketing, and business formation and compliance on a deeper level. This allows me to not only advise what can legally be done, but what should be done in a particular circumstance.

Unique Skills and Business Experience

Unlike almost all attorneys, I consider myself a business person first, and a lawyer second. Any lawyer can tell you what legal steps you should take in order to maximize the protection your business deserves or what litigation strategy will ensure the highest chance of success, but most attorneys do not have the training, experience, or even the desire to advise you that some options might be more cost-effective than others.

I advise my clients on what is not only the most effective legal options, but also what might be best from a business strategy perspective. After all, what good is it to spend $10,000 to solve a $1,000 problem? Likewise, if some legal issue might cause serious impact to your bottom line, you need to know where to focus the most attention.

Unrestricted Access to Your File

Most attorneys still keep a paper file in their office and will make a copy for you at your request, and at your expense. I, however, keep a 100% electronic case file, and I provide unrestricted access to your case file using a confidential online portal called Clio and Google Drive. This means that you access your file any time of day or night at no additional expense and without having to set up an appointment and make a trip to our office. After all, it is your file.

Leveraging Technology

Most lawyers are notoriously slow to adopt new technology. In fact, the problem has gotten so bad that the American Bar Association is now requiring technological competency in its Model Rules. I use technology in almost every part of my practice for one reason: to make it easier for you work with me without sacrificing quality or confidentiality.

I use hundreds of forms, templates, go-bys, apps, and macros to fulfill this goal. As I still  utilize the billable hour in much of my practice, this means that the time I spend working on a matter is time spent analyzing the legal issues and consequences of particular decisions, and not formatting a document. This also means that you aren't having to pay a secretary or paralegal to format those same documents.

Alternative Fee Arrangements

Approximately 40% of my firm's revenue is from alternative fee arrangements. Most Alabama attorneys do not accept alternative fees of any kind. Alternative fee arrangements are fees that are not based an hourly rate. These can be contingency fees, performance fees, flat fees, and other fees that are not based on the time spent on the case.

I use a wide variety of alternative fee arrangements depending on the matter. These alternatives to the hourly rate encourage efficiency instead of bill churning. These arrangements also make it significantly easier to budget for legal services.

The Benefits of a Small Firm

If you have ever worked with a large law firm, you might have experienced the difficulty actually getting your attorney on the phone or getting an appointment. Unlike those attorneys, I pick up the phone when you call. If I can't answer the phone, I return calls within 24 hours, and often by the end of the day. I answer any questions personally, so you will have a single point of contact, and will never be bounced from department to department. I even make house calls.

Working with Us

When people set foot in a lawyer's office, they are often given a multi-page contract and told to sign the agreement before they have had a chance to review the terms. While we still use a written agreement, we publicly post our requirements for you and your expectations of working with us. I do this to prevent any surprise you might have when you receive the agreement.

FAQ

What makes your firm different than another law firm?

Our focus is and has always been entrepreneurs and the legal and business issues that entrepreneurs face. We don’t handle car wrecks, divorces, probating estates, and other practice areas. We are not a “full service” law firm. Because of that, we have developed and implemented specific methods to identify and remedy business-related issues that other attorneys or firms might miss.

Where do you provide services?

We are based in Birmingham, Alabama and primarily serve clients in central Alabama. However, we have represented clients across the county. Our attorneys are licensed to practice in Alabama and Tennessee.

I just have a quick question, do I need to schedule a consultation?

Yes. There are very few “quick questions” in law. Your situation is likely more detailed than you realize. There’s also a number of other reasons for why we don’t answer “quick questions,” which you can find out about by clicking here.

Can you represent my business?

Absolutely. When we are retained, we are either hired by an individual or the company. Rarely are we ethically permitted to represent both an individual and a company if the company has more than one owner. In situations where a business has multiple owners, we are often retained to represent the business and the best interests of that business, which means that we can provide advice to the business and its officers and even mediate potential disputes between owners. However, if we represent the company, we are conflicted out of representing any of the owners individually against any of the other owners of the business.

What are your rates?

Our rates vary depending on the scope of work, the attorney assigned to the matter, and the experience necessary to complete that scope of work. Our attorney rates range between $150 and $325 an hour. Paralegal rates can run between $75 and $125 an hour. Staff rates run from $35 to $65 an hour.

I don’t have a lot of money to hire an attorney, can you still help me?

Of course! We are often retained on a “limited scope” basis that allows us to handle a specific matter, such as a lawsuit, reviewing and negotiating a contract, or drafting documents. We do limited-scope representation on an hourly rate or flat fee, depending on the complexity. This allows us to do a specific project in an economical manner.

Do you provide payment plans?

We do provide payment plans, but we do not start working on a matter until we’ve been paid in full. We accept cash, check, or credit or debit card. If you do not have enough money to get started, we have recently rolled out ClientCredit, which you can find out about here.

Can your firm get paid in equity?

Sometimes, but rarely. It’s very rare that we agree to take an equity position in a company in exchange for legal services. In addition to there being ethical limitations on taking equity, we have found that taking a position in our clients’ businesses can unnecessarily complicate our role as advisors and advocates. While there are exceptions, these are few and far between.

I don’t have the faintest idea of where to start, what should I do?

If you don’t know where to start, then an initial consultation is the best place.
